Cats see fewer colors but dominate in low light and peripheral vision.
Cat vision is the unique way cats perceive the world through their specialized eyes — different from human vision in color, light sensitivity, and field of view.
Cat vision is dichromatic — cats have only two types of color-detecting cone cells compared to three in humans. This means cats see the world primarily in shades of blue, yellow, and gray, while reds and greens appear muted or brownish.
However, cat vision excels in ways human vision cannot match. Cats have 6-8 times more rod cells than humans, giving them extraordinary night vision. Their tapetum lucidum — a reflective layer behind the retina — bounces light back through the photoreceptors, allowing cats to see in light conditions where humans would be completely blind.
Cat vision also provides a wider field of view at approximately 200 degrees (compared to 180 degrees for humans) and superior motion detection, making them exceptional hunters even in low-light conditions.
